PRESS RELEASE                                                                             Friday, 20th June, 2025

As civilian casualties mount due to Israeli military strikes,

Iran calls for International Accountability

The Islamic Republic of Iran strongly condemns the wave of unprovoked military attacks launched in the early hours of Friday 13th June, 2025.  The strikes have resulted in the deaths and injuries of hundreds of civilians, including ordinary men, women and children, university professors as well as many off- duty personnel, as residential areas, hospitals, health centres and critical public infrastructure was targeted.

Iran’s nuclear facilities, installations under full monitoring by the International Atomic Energy Agency, have also been targeted, which violate fundamental international norms and pose grave humanitarian and environmental risks. This is a clear and unlawful act of aggression that violates Article 2(4) of the UN Charter.  The deliberate targeting of civilians and protected facilities constitutes a serious breach of international law, it is in fact a war crime.

Iran affirms its inherent right to self defence under Article 51 of the UN Charter.  Iranian forces are responding proportionately and lawfully in defence of national sovereignty and territorial integrity.  Israeli aggression against Iran cannot and must not be justified any legal or moral standards.  The honest facts cannot be twisted by a Zionist regime and its backers, justifying the criminal activities leading to complicity.

Iran is not seeking escalation, but no nation can remain passive in the face of such a blatant and barbaric assault. We are defending our people, our sovereignty and our commitment to peace within the framework of international law, which has already been seriously undermined by Israel’s relentless atrocities in occupied Palestine and elsewhere.

The Iranian government also noted with concern that the strikes occurred during an ongoing diplomatic process, calling it a profound betrayal of diplomacy and a blow to the credibility of the United Nations system.

Iran is calling on the international community, including Ireland, a nation known for its commitment to peace, diplomacy and international law, to condemn these attacks and support efforts to restore the diplomatic process and accountability.

Ends.
